Design & Beyond

  • Italian Renaissance
The term Renaissance is derived from rebirth. Rebirth of classical thought and design. Society moves away from a culture driven by the church and religion to focus on the humanities and individuality. Accomplishments are made in civil society. Universities are established and bring together Greek and Roman teachings to the forefront, to liberate the human in a humanistic manner. People see themselves as individuals in society as opposed to being part of the larger church. The printing press is invented which now brings out multiple copies of text to spread information across the European continent. Illustrations are printed which […]
  • Harp & Crown
Early in 2023 I had a whirlwind stay in Philadelphia resulting in a whirlwind romance with Harp & Crown. I had the pleasure of visiting this charming, inviting and full of character restaurant for dinner one night and fell in love. Amazing food and wine set aside. The interiors make exquisite use of various textures, patterns and materials to create a modern, rustic yet classy ambiance. I would say that I actually have yet to see an interior which makes such extensive use of a wide variety of materials as cleverly as Harp & Crown. And I truly believe […]
  • Castello di Amorosa
“Wondrous: that is to be marveled at: extraordinary. a wondrous feat”, as defined by merriam webster.com. I visited Castello di Amorosa “Costello” this past September and perhaps for the first time in my life had the definition of “Wondrous” exemplified for me in tangible form. I felt transported. The Castello di Amorosa is a time machine to medieval Italy. In my opinion successful design stimulates our senses and allows us to feel transported, stirring a positive story in our mind, allowing us to break free from the confines of our self image to see in our imagination all our […]
  • Angler SF
Ever wonder if energy is a thing?! I am a believer when I walk into Angler SF, “Angler”. Angler is one of my favourite restaurants. How is it possible that a vegetarian (sometimes vegan) girl like me has favourited a seafood restaurant? It is the way I feel when I am in Angler, the energy is amazing. I instantly feel transported into a luxe cabin that is cozy yet spacious and glamorous yet homey. The earthy interior (hardwood floors, brick walls, wood kitchen and bar) makes me feel grounded and is calming whilst providing the most magical view of […]
  • RH San Francisco
During a recent stay at a city I called home for a year, I visited Restoration Hardware San Francisco, The Gallery at the Historic Bethlehem Steel Building, “RH SF”. And let me tell you, it is the epitome of classical sophistication with modern, clean interiors. According to San Francisco Magazine https://sanfran.com/rh-san-francisco the building was built in 1917 by Frederick H. Meyer, an architect from San Francisco. Architectural Digest, pens the style as Classical Revival. From our post “Ancient Greece” under the “Antiquity & Style” section, we know that the original classical style contributions by the Greeks are signified by […]
